Subject: [*] Bibliophile.hqx
Bibliophile is an attempt to provide a library stack in Hypercard that
addresses the needs of serious collectors and students interested in recording
collections of works in a standard, professional manner. Bibliophile offers
the following features:
1. Sort cards by author name, book title, publisher, publication
date, subject, or keywords.
2. Cards are date stamped, numbered, and noted as to their current
sort status.
3. Book costs can be entered into a separate field. Inventory costs
can be totalled through the utilities button.
4. searches card contents for keyword fields. Recurring searches can
be accomplished by simply clicking a button.
5. Documentation included within the stack itself by a script which
mimics "Balloon help." Users click on a button to begin and then simply pas
the cursor over the item which requires explanation. A short description
appears describing the function of the item. Click again and help
disappears.
6. Dealer addresses are available in a hidden field. A simple click
on a button and the field appears. Another click and the info is hidden.
7. Each card can store standard bibliographical information.
8. Exports a pre-formatted bibliography or catalog as a text file.
The file can then be read by most word-processing applications.
Requires Hypercard 1.2.5 or better. Works fine under Hypercard 2.1 Author

Announcing MacLayers v1.20
17 January, 1993
Summary
-------
A new version of the MacLayers multi-window terminal emulator for
UNIX systems is available by anonymous ftp to rascal.ics.utexas.edu
[128.83.138.20]. Please access rascal during off-peak hours. Look
in mac/communications/MacLayers.
Eric Rosen has taken over development of MacLayers from Dave
Trissel, who has given up trying to find time to work on it.
This is Eric's first MacLayers release. The major new feature of
this release is support for 38400 and 57600 bps. There are also
some bug fixes and other improvements. Eric plans more to come.
For 1.10 users, you can use the 1.10 version of layers, but you
need to compile the new macbput. You also need to make new
settings startup files since the format has changed.
About MacLayers
---------------
MacLayers is a vt100 terminal emulator that allows multiple
terminal windows to be opened to a host simultaneously over a
single serial connection. The remote host computer must be a
UNIX(TM) system which has sockets support. Each terminal window
may be associated with a shell, login to a different host, or an
individual command. Complete facilities are available for
controlling the window and the associated host processes attached
thereto.
MacLayers is free for all to use, but is not in the public
domain. You may not sell MacLayers or any program derived from
it.
What's New in MacLayers 1.20
----------------------------
The most important aspect of MacLayers release 1.20 is that it
celebrates a new primary MacLayers developer. Dave Trissel has given
up trying to find time to work on MacLayers and has instead turned it
over to Eric Rosen. This is Eric's first MacLayers release.
Major New Features:
1. Support for 38400 and 57600 bps rates.
2. "Open" option added to File menu; in non-layers mode, this
allows one to open previously saved settings files.
3. "Save As" option modified so that it is possible to save
the settings to the currently opened settings file.
4. Copy-Paste facility in the edit menu.
Major Fixes:
1. Powerbooks with internal modems no longer hangup when layers mode
is shut down.
2. The "Hangup" menu choice now actually hangs up Hayes compatible modems.
MacLayers v1.20 can be FTP'd from rascal.ics.utexas.edu
[128.83.138.20]. Please access rascal only during off-peak hours.
It will soon be available at sumex-aim.stanford.edu and
mac.archive.umich.edu as well.
You will need two files: one containing source to be compiled on a
Unix host, the other containing the Macintosh application and
documentation. Please read the enclosed documentation before sending
comments to layers-reply@rascal.ics.utexas.edu.
Enjoy!

Subject: [*] PowerLock-31.hqx
PowerLock Release 3
------------------
PowerLock is the "front door" to your Macintosh. It is an easy to use
start up application that can be completely configured and customised
to suit your own personal needs.
PowerLock started out as a start up security application, and this
remains its major task. However, through AddOn Technology, PowerLock
can become much more. Included with PowerLock are twelve AddOns that
provide new features ranging from improvements to PowerLock, to
completely new capabilities.
Here's a summary of features:
- fully System 7 and System 6 Savvy, exploiting each System with
features unique to each
- full use of color and sound effects
- includes a special Desk Accessory, Function Key and Extension
- support for both a startup graphic and a timeout graphic
- creates a log of all activity which can be analysed (via LogManager)
through PowerLock
- SuperSecurity: additional security options for "power users"
- all user names and passwords are encrypted
- registered users can obtain an access key for their copy of PowerLock
in case of a lock-out
- short cut keys available from all dialogs
- Auto-Install option (System 7 only)
- support for five users inbuilt or, via PowerUsers, up to 99 users of
your Macintosh. PowerUsers adds ability to limit access times,
restrict files and folders accessed, etc. AutoLogon automatically
re-establishes each users' server connections on startup.
- MasterPassword capability for corporate users
- PowerMessages provides a simple messaging system allowing users of a
single Macintosh to leave each other messages
PowerLock is ComboWare, a combination of PostCardWare and ShareWare. It can
be
used by individuals at home for the price of one PostCard. Use of
PowerLock in any other circumstances requires registration and payment
of the ShareWare fee. Education discounts apply. A registration form
can be found in the Manual.

other QB programmers that could use these PCR's. I'm making them freeware
because I don't have the time to support them. If you want the source for
any of these PCR's, it can be had for a small fee. If there are any bugs,
let me know and I try and fix them.
Good luck and I hope these are of some use to you.

Subject: Apple and the IIsi
Okay...
I have a wonderful IIsi, and as most people who have been on the net
for the past while are aware, the sound of the IIsi cuts out at will
and is frustrating as hell.
Guess what? Mine does the same thing too! Yay for apple's design of
plug in speakers. Sure...it makes it really really easy to take
the whole thing apart and clean it, but that isn't the point. The point
is that I'm really very very annoyed at this inconvenience with my
sound going in and out at random. Yeah....there has been speculation
as to why it does so, i.e. oxidization of the spring contacts and whatnot
and the alternatives have been to plug in external speakers to the IIsi,
but that is NOT the point here.
The point is that I bought a computer with an apple logo on it. I *expect*
it to work as well as any other apple designed product. It is simply
unacceptable for them to continue selling the IIsi without it being
remedied. I want to know what the h*** Apple Co. will be doing about
this 'feature' of the IIsi. Its a pain in the ass, and I really don't
feel like I should have to get external speakers just so I can hear
the bloody beeps and clicks that I use.
Sorry for the bandwidth...this issue has just been buggin' me for too long.
If anybody in Apple is reading this...kindly tell me what Apple is going
to do to solve the problem?

Steve Portigal asks about applications that allow audio and text to be
combined for use in an experiment. Steve, you don't say what kind of
experiment you have in mind, but if you are using a Mac and need control
over the presentation of various kinds of stimuli, you might find the
experiment program PsyScope useful. PsyScope was developed by Jonathon
Cohen and Brian MacWhinney at Carnegie-Mellon University to support a
wide range of experiments, mostly having to do with language. I use
PsyScope to run experiments in which audio and text are combined in
a variety of ways. The system uses a graphic user interface for designing
experiments, making it fairly easy for inexperienced researchers (and
computer illiterates) to program. I've appended below the distribution
policy for PsyScope. This is serious scientific software; it will not
be much use to browsers.

I'm not sure the dealer hit the nail entirely on the head. I just got a bad
f-line error in Excel, which I am pretty sure was due to the small amount of
memory it received after my other apps started. I am not running with 32-bit
addressing on (don't have enough memory yet). Maybe it has something to do
with memory allocation and/or swapping? There was an awful lot of disk
activity before the error. Anyone out there know the definitive answer?

Let me take this occasion to suggest this is why "E=MC~2" will not give
his or her real name and affiliation? Any "My Apple Dealer says" nonsense
gets at best a giggle from me. Is this the same "My Apple Dealer" who in
1988 sold me 4M of RAM to be added to my 1M Mac II that resulted in the

You are at best ingenuous, E=MC~2. I got lots of "bad f-line" errors long
before I even considered authorizing 32-bit addressing under System 7.
And that was close to two years ago when I first went head-to-head with
System 7.
I mean no personal offense, E=MC~2, 'cept maybe that you do not have the
courtesy to actually identify yourself. However, do you -- or anyone else

Yes I'm rude, crude, and socially unacceptable. What else is new? But
what should I do if/when David doesn't answer this final chance at an
e-mail ID? Or any address for that matter. Should I assume he has given
up and simply post the 2.2 version to the sumex-aim archive? Will Bill
even let me post 2.2 to the archive without the approval of the author
who cannot be found? Stay tuned. Film at eleven.

[I do not feel that posting a registered and hence uncrippled version of
the software would be appropriate. The author has the ultimate right to
decide what he wants to do with the software. To post the uncripped

It would be akin to posting FullWrite Professional because the company

Subject: Font problems: MS-DOS Type 1 -> Mac? and 7.0.1 bitmaps
I have two problems regarding outline fonts:
Apologies if either is a FAQ.
1. If I have a Type 1 Postscript font in MS-DOS format,
how can I convert it to use on the Mac with ATM? I know
TT-Converter does the equivalent job with Truetype fonts.
2. (Harder!) When I upgraded my Mac LC (6 Mb RAM) from System 7.0
to system 7.0.1 (both tuned-up 1.1.1), the strangest thing happened.
The machine appears to be unable to find the basic system bitmap fonts,
which I believe are stored in ROM: Monaco 9, Chicago 12, Geneva 12
and Geneva 9. Instead, it generates these using any other font sizes
it has, or from the TrueType outline. Side effects are that these fonts
are drawn to the screen relatively slowly, and they look different:
Chicago 12 has slashed zeroes, and all the special control characters
appear all the time, and its italic looks awful. Monaco I actually
prefer in its new guise. My system file contains an italic Geneva 9
which I generated with BitFont 1.0.1, so all Geneva 9 is always italic
now.
Curious things happen when I remove all other sizes of these fonts from
my system file: the Mac can now find the system bitmaps and everything
else is normal, but the fonts no longer appear in the font menu!
I thought I could use BitFont (a shareware program to generate bitmaps
>From outline fonts, very useful if you want to display proper italics
on screen) to generate the bitmaps again once I could display them.
But the font menu had no Chicago, Monaco, Geneva in it, so I couldn't
select them! If I remove the outline fonts only and leave, say, a large
bitmap size, the system will try to generate, say, Chicago 12 from
Chicago 16, or whatever and the result is ugly. On the other hand,
having no sizes or outlines available at all means that all sizes
are generated from the ROM bitmaps - also unsatisfactory.
I guess I can solve my problem by finding another Mac without
this hangup, use BitFont to generate the basic bitmap sizes that are
"missing", and putting them in my System File. (I haven't done this
yet, but logically it should work.) But something is obviously wrong
with my system. I have a huge list of extensions installed including
ATM and Now Utilities, but switching them all off has no effect at all
on the problem. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my system
and whether it will have any other serious side effects?
Please answer to me directly and I will summarise to the net.

A language is a living thing that changes and grows. This is
particularly true in the creation of new words and changes in the
meaning of words. For example, in some groups in the US, simple
means easy. In the poor black communities of Philadelphia, simple
means stupid. In some communities, hacker means someone who
likes to alter software or the normal processes of a computer for
fun. By this, the older definition, changing icons, etc., could be
considered hacking. At MacHack, they do not make unauthorized
access to anyone's networks, to the best of my knowledge, but
amuse themselves by "hacking" the system software to do things
like make Oscar the grouch come out of the trash and sing every
time you empty the trash. Steve Wozniak, for one, is highly offended
by definitions similar to the one I quoted above.
More recently, the term hacker has changed to mean exactly what
I quoted above.
Defenders of the word hacker would say that that's like saying "gun
enthusiast" means someone who kills people with guns simply
because some gun enthusiasts have killed people. In other words, if
all people who make unauthorized entry are hackers, that does not
mean all hackers are people who make unauthorized entry.
If I were writing a dictionary, I would probably have to make two
different definitions of the word hacker. -Pete Tamas
Disclaimer: I realize that the person I quoted said:
"In this case", indicating there are more than one
correct definitions.

works perfectly. I was able to gain an addition 2MB of
disk space. It was easy and it took a while (about 3
hours with backing up and restoring), but I did it while
reading. You can use Apple's HD SC Setup to do it. It seems
that Apple rounds off all drives in a certain range to the
same size and therefore some drives get short-changed.
See the Feb. Macworld, page 278. I am sure most people

|do not work with the AIC are VersaTerm PRO and Microsoft Word (but
|then what does?). I only use AIC on fairly large programs (its
|compression is not quite as small as AD's) to speed up launch time and
|to keep them from expanding on my hard disk every time I launch them.
|For example, I use it on Mathematica (4225K -> 1822K), Textures (753K ->
|393K), Canvas (973 -> 570) and a few others. I have also saved several
|hundred K by compressing most of my cdevs and extensions. As far as I
|can tell, AIC works flawlessly. I have not lost any data and I have not
|experienced any sort of crash that I can attribute to AIC.
|
|I have also run some tests comparing the compressed size of files using
|AD 2.0 vs. AIC and have found that the AD files are a little smaller,
|but *NOT MUCH*. For example, for Mathematica 2.1, the AIC size is
|1822K, down from 4225K, and the AD size is about 1890K.
AD is not the smallest size. ADS (S = smaller) is a more compact
method. AD method is quick to compress and expand but isn't to tight.
ADS will always compress smaller than the AIC.
|
|As for program performance, everything I compress with AIC runs
|normally, as if it was not compressed. Mathematica, MPW, THINK C, Canvas,
|they all run at the same speed with exactly the same behavior.
|
|The bottom line is this: I don't think you have anything to worry

Subject: macintosh-news.src for WAIS
The Public CM WAIS Server accumulates three sources of
Macintosh-related news: the info-mac digest, the
comp.sys.mac.programmer digest, and TidBITS. Now, you can search all
three using a single source description named macintosh-news.src.
The simplest way to add macintosh-news.src to your copy of WAIS is to
search the directory of servers (directory-of-servers.src) for
"Macintosh." macintosh-news.src will be the top-scoring document of
the response; open and save it.
Folks who like to hack their WAIS sources directly can simply cut the
following and save it in an appropriate place:

Subject: Mac sa a terminal for VAX/VMS
Hi, everybody!
We use Macs with PacerLink 5.3a or NCSA Telnet to connect to our VAX. There is
a special encoding for cyrillic characters called KOI-8. 8-bit is necessary to
be able to display it. I have all the required software for the VAX (namely, a
driver program and downloadable VT200 set) and VT terminals connected
directly to the VAX are perfectly capable of displaying these cyrillic
characters. Macs, however, display garbage only. Is it the absence of 8-bit
(use of 7-bit is all that is needed for English alpphabet) or something else
software-related? Could you suggest ways to ovecome this problem? May be I
need
some other software? (either AppleTalk or TCP/IP connection, no modem.)
Where do I get it? Thanks a lot for your help!!!

I beg to differ. While I would agree that most modems are the same,
the quality of modems does differ, and some are able to maintain a
connection through line noise and even phone pick-ups better than
others. To be honest, I cannot give anything more than empirical
evidence, but after a number of years of working with modems in a house
where few other family members care one iota if they break my
connection, I found that my better quality modems held up to line
"abuse" much much better than the cheaper ones. (Sometimes I was
the guilty party myself, and when I would have sworn the connection
should have broken, I just got some screen garbage and then continued

Subject: One reason accelerator board prices have dropped
As has been noted, there has been a substantial price drop in accelerator
board prices. Aside from good 'ole competition (something I wish apple had
more of!) I think there might be another reason. I just installed a new
accelerator board, a Systech (aka Novy) Imagepro board and I was astonished to
see that the 68030 did NOT have a part number like MC68030RC25, which is
standard Motorola nomenclature. Instead it had a different letter/digit
sequence that meant absolutely nothing to me.
The punchline after checking with Novy: Motorola has out-sourced the 030 and
the number is someone's internal product code. The outcome is cheaper
68030's.
It seems to run fine, and at 33 mhz too! BTW, the Imagepro is a fine, fine
accelerator with very nice video output. I'm driving a two page 1024x768
Zenith and the display is beautiful.

Subject: Postscript logo to fax modem
In Digest #13, Pete Tamas discusses a problem first raised by me a few
weeks ago:
"I often use the postscript code of our institutional letterhead, and paste
it at the front of letters written using Microsoft Word, and print
everything on non-letterhead paper. This works like a charm when I actually
want to print and mail a letter. But often I would just like to send the
letter by fax modem, without first creating a printed hard copy and scan
that, with the usual loss of quality. Is there a way to convert the
Postscript into, say, a 200dpi bitmap, or something else that a standard
fax modem can handle?"
Pete Tamas made a number of suggestions, most of which seem to assume that
the Postscript code exists in the form of an EPS file.
Well, the postscript code is raw ASCII postscript code, type TEXT, of the
kind to be downloaded to any Postscript printer DIRECTLY, where the
built-in PS interpreter processes it. The file has no resource fork
carrying a PICT, or anything like that.
When you paste such TEXT into Word, it looks like a computer program in the
rather verbose Postscipt language, nothing like the printout it generates.
But you can instruct Word to just ignore that text (the procedure actually
makes it invisible on the screen), and to simply pass it through to the
printer, which recognizes it as postscript code and interprets it as such.
Works like a charm. I'll skip the procedural details; they are not relevant
here, and are well-documented in the Word manual.
Freehand refused even to show the file on its list of files that can be
opened.
> ... If I wanted to solve this problem
>AND learn about Postscript, I would look in one of the Postscript
>books (Peachpit Press usually has good books and has one called
>Postscript: A Visual Approach) for how an EPS file is defined. Or,
>I would create a file in Illustrator or Freehand and save it as an
>EPS file and poke around in that with Word.
Thanks, but that hardly what I had in mind; so maybe I am stuck with Pete'e
last suggestion:
>If you don't care to experiment, print the file and scan it. I can't
>think of another way to do it. Good luck!-Pete Tamas
True, but I had hoped for something better (and with better resolution than
72dpi -- the letterhead is 7.5" wide)

I am currently puzzled as to why I can't get color output on my new HP 550C
DeskWriter color inkjet printer from my old Macintosh Plus.
The system:
Mac 'Plus' (an upgraded 128K Mac) with 4 MB memory. Connected via AppleLink
(phonenet) to a new HP 550C color injet printer.
The 'Plus' is running System 7.0.1 which I got off a set of Install floppies
for my Powerbook 100. The color driver is newly installed from the 7 floppies
for the 550C.
The only software with color definition capability I have is FileMaker-Pro
2.0.
The problem:
I can define color text fields and color connecting lines in FileMaker-Pro
2.0,
but when I Print the document, everything comes in Black, no color.
Why can't I get color to come out on the 550C??
Any hints, explanations, etc. will be appreciated.

Seems to work fine in Word to select the character, copy it, open
the Replace dialog, and paste that character into the Find box. So
you don't have to search by what's on the clipboard, you just put
the clipboard contents into the Replace dialog. I just hate having
to tell Word that no, of course I don't want it to open my text file
with the Text with Layout converter, especially because it's never
all that clear what such a converter will do to the file. Now admittedly,
without macro capabilities, it would be a pain to have to perform
several find and replace tasks every time you opened a specific type
of file, but hey, that's what Nisus is for.

Word doesn't let you search for what is in the clipboard, using the ^c
shorthand that is available in the replace part of the dialog. However, you
can select the offending text, and paste it into the search part of the
dialog, then replace it with whatever you like.

What version of the driver are you using? I believe it also varies from
application to application, because some applications (Pagemaker, for ex.)
adapt the printer driver. Mine, 7.2.2 I think, does not have a setting for
fractional widths in its "native" format.

Yes I think System versions prior to 7.1 are still free... but why don't
you contact BCS/Mac, the Mac division of the Boston Computer Society, a
huge user group? The surely have system 6.0.8 disks.
I have made the experience here that a dealer is more likely to be

I don't know the elegant solution for sure. The quick-and-dirty way to fix
